Phu Bia To Open New Gold Mine

Phu Bia, one of the largest mining companies operating in Laos, expects to kick off its new gold mining project in Vientiane province in March, the Australian miner reported.

PanAust, the parent company of Phu Bia, this week announced the progress of its Ban Houayxai gold and silver mine project, saying the US$168 million gold and silver mining facility is scheduled to come on-stream in March this year. Continue reading

Vang Vieng’ River Of Booze And Tubes May Be River Of No Return

Yesterday the body of Melbourne student Daniel Eimutis, 19, was found in a river in Vang Vieng, three days after he went missing while tubing with friends. Family said he had drowned.
The tragedy comes less than a fortnight after Sydney traveller Lee Hudswell, 26, was killed after jumping from a tower while tubing in the same area. Reports at the time said at least 22 people had died in the river last year. Continue reading

Central Bank To Release New 100,000 Note

The Bank of the Lao PDR will issue a 100,000 kip banknote early next month in a bid to encourage more people to use the national currency. Speaking at a press conference in Vientiane yesterday, Currency Issuing Department Director General Mr Souphat Khotnhotha said the main purpose of putting the 100,000 kip note in circulation was to make it easier for people to make cash payments. Vang Vieng Bars Closed After Rowdy Parties

Authorities in Vangvieng district, Vientiane province, have closed seven bars on Kang Island after finding alcoholic drinks laced with hallucinogenic mushrooms being served to tourists.
